2018 Meroi Friulano, Friuli DOC, Italy (750ml)

Aged for 11 months in 30% new oak barrique barrels. In 1920, Domenico Meroi founded a wine estate in the hilly, high elevation town of Buttrio, in the heart of the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC.

Almost a century later, Domenico’s great-grandson, Paolo, along with his son, Damiano, produce some of the finest, most sought after wines in the appellation from those same vineyards. The 12 hectare estate is farmed strictly organically and is planted to the main varietals of the region: Friulano, Malvasia, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon (Blanc), Refosco and Merlot. The Meroi men typically age their wines, including their whites, in a fair amount of new oak, yet remarkably, they manage to craft beautifully pure wines that speak clearly of their varietal without any oaky notes to overshadow all that healthy fruit.
