2012 Le Marchesine Saten Millesimato, Franciacorta DOCG, Lombardia, Italy (750ml)

We have experienced the lovely non-vintage and vintage Rosé Franciacortas from Le Marchesine and now get to enjoy this special Satèn bottling from this excellent, and very fairly priced bubbles producer in Lombardia.

Satèn is a separate classification for "metodo classico" or "classic method" as in secondary fermentation in bottle the way Champagne is made, that must be a blanc de blancs, or only made from white grapes. In Franciacorta, besides Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco is also allowed, but this Satèn from Le Marchesine is 100% Chardonnay. The other DOCG rule for Satèn is that it must be made using less atmospheric pressure, only 4.5 vs 6 for other Franciacorta, which gives the wine a smoother, more velvety texture, which this wine has in spades. The bouquet offers a wonderful melange of dried stone fruits and nuts (particularly hazelnuts) that flow onto the palate. The wine ends in a delicate manner with a hint of honey on the bright and silky finish.
